Conservative councillor says police shouldn't record rape as an offence

A former Conservative MP, now a councillor in Worcestershire, has been criticised by the police for suggesting that they should no longer record rape as an offence.

Alan Amos is currently a Conservative councillor for Gorse Hill & Warndon on Worcestershire County Council and was mayor of Worcester between 2014-15. He switched from Labour back to the Conservatives in 2006 after previously switching from the Conservatives to Labour in 1994.

As an MP Amos was known for his strong views on rape, calling for rapists and muggers to be flogged. He lost his seat in 1992 after being cautioned for a "childish and stupid" indecency incident on Hamstead Heath.

Glasgow Labour councillor charged with embezzlement

A Labour councillor in Glasgow has been charged with embezzlement and breach of trust.

Cllr Yvonne Kucuk and an unnamed man were charged on Thursday and the case has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal for prosecution. It is not yet known whether the charges relate to her role as Regeneration Manager at the taxpayer-funded Dalmarnock Hub Trust.

The Glasgow Labour Party have suspended Cllr Kucuk.

Londonderry councillor given conditional discharge over vandalism

A dissident republican councillor in Londonderry has had his 6 month prison sentence for criminal damage replaced with a conditional discharge after money was made available to the magistrate's court to pay the costs of cleaning up after him.

Cllr Gary Donnelly was sentenced to 6 months in prison along with William Brogan and Terry Porter for daubing anti-internment slogans on the city walls. After £2,600 was paid into the court to cover the costs, the judge gave the three a conditional discharge and ordered the money be split between the NI Environment Agency and Foyle Search & Rescue.

Conservative councillor's offensive tweets prompt call for powers to hold councillors to account

A Labour councillor in Dover has called for training in the Nolan Principals of Standards in Public Life for all councillors after repeated offensive comments made by a Conservative councillor on Twitter.

Cllr Gordon Cowan wants Dover District Council to lobby the British government for more powers to hold councillors to account and to put on training for councillors after taking umbrage with Conservative Cllr Bob Frost's tweets. Cllr Frost has referred to French people as "frogs", asians as "sons of camel drivers" and "rag heads" and black people "jungle bunnies". He recently said that Labour voters live on "a diet of lard and fags".

Tory councillor quits job that saved him from community service for benefit fraud

A Conservative councillor in Windsor who avoided being sentenced to community service for benefit fraud just four weeks ago because it would interfere with his job as a postman has left his job.

The aptly-named Cllr Peter Lawless was given a conditional discharge after being convicted of benefit fraud at Slough Magistrates Court. He was anonymously reported for failing to declare his £19,590 councillor's allowance to the council and continuing to claim housing benefit he wasn't entitled to.

Conservative Councillor in Congleton defects to UKIP

A Conservative councillor on Cheshire East Council has defected to UKIP.

Cllr Andy Barrett, who represents the Odd Rode ward in Congleton, is the second UKIP councillor on Cheshire East Council.

Clearly that message was lost on Cllr Barrett who has instead ditched the Tories for UKIP.

Respected Conservative Councillor Defects to UKIP

In the run-up to the Council and European Elections on 4th June, Councillor Nigel Haughton, a much respected member of Brickhill Parish Council and life-long Conservative supporter has defected to the UK Independence Party. He has also announced his candidacy for the Bedford Unitary Authority elections, for his new Party.

Councillor Haughton said: “I have become increasingly disillusioned with the local Tories on the Borough Council. The best efforts of the Brickhill Conservative Action team have been thwarted by the leadership of the Borough Conservative Group.”

“The lack of support for the campaign to save our green fields in Brickhill is a prime example of the leadership’s indifference to the concerns of local residents. Whilst the coffers of the Borough have been swelled as a result of the local housing development, we have seen no benefits whatsoever; the funds have been spent elsewhere.

“At a national level, the daily siphoning away of £40million of taxpayers’ money to unelected Brussels bureaucrats is even more disgraceful.

“Reflecting on the complacency of the Borough Tories whilst nationally the Party ‘sits on the fence’ over our national independence, I have decided to take a principled stand by joining and supporting the UK Independence Party.”
