Angela Merkel's party comes third in regional elections

Angela Merkel's CDU party has been beaten into third place in regional elections in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania by Alternativ für Deutschland (AfD) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

The pro-EU parties in Germany have all made a pact to freeze AfD out regional and national government just like the pro-EU parties and UKIP here but it's a sign of things to come. Germans have had enough of bailing out half of Europe, millions of so-called refugees making their way to Germany and terrorists smuggling their way into the country to carry out attacks.

The CDU gained 19.8% of the vote in Angela Merkel's home state behind second placed AfD on 21.4% and and the SPD who secured 30.2% of the vote. It's looking increasingly likely that the CDU will come second or even third in next year's general election and that Merkel will lose her seat.

Merkel given a bloody nose in regional elections

Angela Merkel's CDU party has been given a battering at the polls courtesy of the AfD and Green parties.

Opinion polls predicted losses for Merkel's party as Germans become increasingly unhappy at the invasion of their country by illegal immigrants and refugees from all over the Middle East, Africa and beyond. The predictions proved to be accurate as Alternativ für Deutschland made serious inroads in Friday's regional elections.

AfD's two remaining MEPs (five have left the party) are currently members of David Cameron's pro-EU European Conservatives & Reformists group in the EU Parliament but are being expelled after party leader, Frauke Petry, told a newspaper in January that German border guards need to stop letting illegal immigrants into the country, using armed force as a last resort.

Merkel has been trying to associate AfD with the Nazis in their desperation to prevent them from gaining power but it has done little to convince voters who have abandoned Merkel's CDU for AfD and the Greens. If these elections are reflective of voting in the general election next year then Merkel's days are numbered.

Eurosceptic Alternative Für Deutschland enters Saxony's regional parliament

The German eurosceptic party, Alternative für Deutschland, has entered Saxony's regional parliament for the first time after winning around 9.6% of the vote.

Angela Merkel's Christian Democrat Party got 39% of the vote and remain the largest party but the liberal Free Democrats got a trouncing, securing just 3.5% of the vote and losing all their representation. The Neo Nazi National Democratic Party looks to have lost all its representation in the regional parliament as well but it's close to the 5% threshold.

The success of a eurosceptic party in German is something that would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago but there is a trend across the EU of eurosceptic parties challenging the europhile status quo. In some countries the refusal to listen to the legitimate concerns of citizens about the advance of the EU superstate has resulted in extremists hoovering up that eurosceptic support but mostly it has seen liberals and fascists take a beating in the polls just as it has here in the UK.

As a committed europhile, Angela Merkel will be disappointed at the thought of sharing power with a eurosceptic party but what she values more than anything else is power so don't be surprised to see some concessions to the eurosceptics from Frau Merkel and the Christian Democrats.
