Shropshire Conservative councillor under investigation for planning irregularities

The wife of the disgraced former Conservative leader of Shropshire Council is to appear before the council's standards committee over alleged planning irregularities.

It is believed that two complaints have been made about Cllr Joyce Barrow's conduct but the council says it is unable to comment. Her husband, Keith Barrow, was last year forced to resign after a former UKIP councillor reported him for misconduct in public office and the police opened an investigation.

The Conservative leader of Shropshire Council has resigned as a councillor and director of a council-owned company amid accusations of misconduct.

Cllr Keith Barrow was investigated by a firm of solicitors on behalf of the council after he was reported to their standards board by UKIP councillor Dave Tremellen for failing to declare an interest in the appointment of a firm of accountants for the council's IP&E company. The investigation concluded that although he had acted improperly in failing to declare that the accountants being appointed were his personal accountants he didn't exert any undue influence.

Barrow unexpectedly resigned yesterday before news of him being reported to West Mercia Police for misconduct in public office was made public. We understand that a second referral to the standards committee was due to be made yesterday on a related matter.

The Conservative leader of Shropshire Council is reportedly being investigated by the council over allegations that he breached their code of conduct.

Shropshire Council are refusing to confirm or deny whether Cllr Keith Barrow is under investigation as they say it could prejudice any investigation if there were one but someone forgot to brief Deputy Leader, Steve Charmley, who said he was aware of an investigation but wouldn't comment because it was an ongoing investigation.
