Peterborough Labour withdraw "cheap and divisive" leaflet

The Labour Party have been forced to withdraw a local election leaflet being distributed in Peterborough after it emerged they had replaced a section about immigration in a Polish translation in a leaflet with words about keeping the city tidy.

The English section of the leaflet says that Labour will deliver a crackdown on the UK's "unjust immigration policy" but the Polish translation omits the mention of immigration and instead talks about the importance of keeping the area tidy and getting people involved in local politics.

The leaflet has been criticised as "divisive" with local Conservative MP, Stewart Jackson, saying "this is a cheap and divisive tactic that should have no place in an election campaign". Mr Jackson has presumably forgotten that just two years ago the Conservative Party in the London Borough of Newham went even further, appealing directly to the Muslim population with discriminatory election pledges in a leaflet written in Urdu and Gujurati. Hypocrisy aside, though, he's correct. This sort of thing is divisive and has no place in an election.

Peterborough Labour Party official jailed for child sex offences

A Labour Party official in Peterborough has been jailed for breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and a Community Order.

Convicted paedophile, Andrew Palmer, is an election agent for Peterborough Labour Party. He was banned from having any unsupervised contact with children and from carrying out certain activities on the internet. He has twice breached the orders - one breach was related to some deleted WhatsApp messages on his phone which are presumed to be of children and the other was for having unsupervised contact with a child - and has been sentenced to 30 months in prison.

Palmer has 7 previous convictions for 13 offences starting in 1979 with a conviction for indecent assault. The police have given him the highest risk rating and the judge described him as "a real danger to the public".

The Labour Party refused to tell the Peterborough Telegraph whether they knew about Palmer's convictions but confirmed that they will be excluding him from the party.

Peterborough LibLabCon taking councillor allowances

Prospective LibLabCon councillors in Peterborough are being told to give part of their allowances to their parties to help pay for campaigning if they get elected.

Labour are telling candidates they will have to donate 10% of their allowances to their local Labour Party if they are elected, the Tories expect their candidates to give a minimum of £300 per year if elected and the Lib Dems advise their candidates (it's not compulsory but the application form asks if they will so it's obvious which candidates won't be selected) to donate unspecified amounts.

The Peterborough branch of UKIP doesn't ask candidates to agree to donate part of their allowances and its Chairman, Robin Talbot, told Peterborough Today that if councillors don't need all their allowances then they could take less and council tax could be cut.
